To me, the best way to celebrate women’s speech is to hear women speak.
That’s why this year, to celebrate International Women’s Day, I’ve teamed up with KeyNote Women, a wonderful non-profit based in Singapore. Together, we’re holding a unique and joyful event: the very first global women’s “speech-a-thon.”
This coming weekend, March 5-6, we’re holding two separate sessions, with 29 women from around the world reading historic speeches by women.

We’re letting women narrate history as they saw it, with their own voice, in their own words.
It’s a continuum of women’s voices through the ages — informing, educating, and inspiring their audiences with the power of the spoken word.
All the women who’ll be reading are professional speakers. We come from the Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and the US. The women whose words we’ll be celebrating are similarly diverse and come from all over the world.
The speeches come from The Speaking While Female Speech Bank, the world’s largest collection of oratory by women.
I’ll be reading a speech by one of my all-time favorites, the Black activist Anna Julia Cooper. She delivered her remarkable speech, “Women’s Cause is One and Universal,” at the World’s Congress of Representative Women in the spring of 1893.
Unfortunately, Anna Julia Cooper is largely absent from the history books. Like thousands of other women, her voice was overlooked.
We’re shining a spotlight on overlooked women. We’re challenging the assumption that men make the best speakers. We’re busting the myth of women’s silences.
But this weekend, we’re shining a spotlight on those women. We’re letting them narrate history as they saw it, with their own voice, in their own words.

The times for two separate live events — each with different speakers and content — are:
- 9-10:30pm ET (that’s the evening of March 5)
- 3-4:30am ET (okay, I’ll understand if those of you in the US want to skip that one)
